Tesla Model Y: Dark Wheel Covers Now Standard in the USA

Introduced in May 2024 as an optional feature for $500, the dark hubcaps are now part of the standard equipment for the Tesla Model Y.

At Tesla, the truth of yesterday is not the truth of today, nor that of tomorrow. After turning away a large part of its loyal community by offering plastic hubcaps for $500, which were strictly the same as the previously standard ones but in a darker shade, Tesla has thus backtracked.

The marketing blunders of the Californian manufacturer have been multiplying over the past few months. It was, however, evident to a sound mind to anticipate the backlash. It’s not a few extra paint pigments that would have dramatically increased the price of these plastic accessories. Mobiwisy had also expressed concern, headlining “Does Tesla take its customers for fools?“.

In that previous article, we recalled the facts with a commercial launch already confirmed for these hubcaps in China and Australia at no extra cost. The insult was all the greater since the previously standard hubcaps – once again, exactly the same but in light gray instead of dark gray – are still sold on the store for a price of $35 each. That’s $140 for four, not $500.

The Controversial Hubcaps

After 15 days of repeated attacks on the forums, Tesla heard the message and decided to make this “new” hubcap standard on its Model Y Long Range (Propulsion and Dual Motor).

As one piece of information leads to another at Tesla, this marketing and commercial blunder will soon be forgotten… unless that dear Elon tries the maneuver again in Europe, where his hubcaps could also revive the dynamic a bit.
