Tesla Model Y Grande Autonomie

The first sign of competition approaching the Renault Scenic and Peugeot E-3008 Long Range, Tesla discreetly adjusts its prices.

For months now, Tesla has resolved to be just another automaker. That is, resorting to permanent discounts to trigger purchase decisions. Something the American manufacturer had avoided doing for years.

But the story was predictable: once you aim to sell millions of cars, the commercial dynamics inevitably change. From an undisputed leader position, Tesla now faces challenges from Chinese manufacturers, American obviously, but European as well.

Surprisingly, the most aggressive response in Europe comes from the historic automakers such as Renault, Peugeot, and Citroën who offer relevant, competitively priced products. This is their chance: Tesla currently cannot meet the expectations of most drivers. Specifically, a vehicle priced between 25,000 and 35,000 euros. And in the higher segment, to offer a car with 600 km range at an affordable price.

The Renault Scenic, starting at €34,990 with its 60 kWh battery, is thus €6,000 cheaper than a Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive. Admittedly, it’s comparing apples and oranges, but customers buy according to their means.

The same applies to the Long Range version fitted with an 87 kWh battery, sold at €41,990 after bonuses. Yet, at this very similar price to the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive also discounted (€40,990), the autonomy gap is huge: 455 km for the American versus 625 km for the French. The situation is even starker for the so-called “Long Range” Tesla Model Y, which offers “only” 533 km of range. That’s still 92 km less than the Scenic, but previously priced at €52,990.

Above €47,000, no bonus in France… Tesla has therefore quietly decided to discount this model to restore its appeal. The “Long Range” argument no longer holds commercial weight.

The Tesla Model Y Long Range now benefits from a €3,180 discount, bringing its price below the symbolic €50,000 mark: €49,810.

That said, it remains about €8,000 more expensive than the Renault Scenic Long Range… As for the approaching Peugeot E-3008, its “small version” with the 73 kWh battery at €39,990 already offers 525 km of range… and 700 km with the 98 kWh version. Truly a game changer!
