Nissan R32 Conversion

Nissan Reveals an Electrified GT-R R32 at the Tokyo Motor Show 2025. Sacrilege or a beautiful homage to a legend?

Whether you’re a Nissan fan or not, in Japan, when you mention Skyline or GT-R, you can see eyes light up. The legend began a little over 50 years ago, with the very first Nissan Skyline, then the first Skyline GT-R. Few vehicles are so iconic that just three letters suffice to evoke them. Nevertheless, GT-R has become synonymous with supercars and unparalleled performance. And this has lasted for half a century. The concept is simple and unwavering: a four-door sedan with an exceptional 6-cylinder engine. A half-century of performance, history, and legend leading to the ultimate achievement, the current GT-R, code R35. An icon for the brand and in the world of motorsport.

But one particular generation has left a lasting impression—the GT-R R32, produced between 1989 and 1994. Already, living on the cusp of the 1980s and 1990s demonstrates impeccable taste. This car is a friend of excellence! It was even named Nissan NISMO’s all-time sports car. It won major and prestigious titles across three continents. In Europe, the R32 won the 24 Hours of Spa in 1991, and the Australian Touring Car Championship for the first time in 1991, followed by a victory at the Bathurst 1000 in 1992. But it was in Japan where the R32 achieved its greatest success, with wins in all Touring Car championships in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993. In terms of automotive passion, from real to virtual, there’s just one step—and it has boldly crossed it by becoming one of the flagship cars of the Gran Turismo saga on PlayStation.

For all these reasons, we can only applaud Nissan’s boldness with the R32 GT-R EV Conversion concept. A venerable and respectable R32 Skyline GT-R (BNR32) has been converted into an electric vehicle by a dedicated team of volunteer Nissan engineers. Work began in March 2023, with updates shared on Nissan’s social media channels. This initiative aims to capture and recreate the charm of the R32 by integrating modern electrification. Opinions will vary, but you already understand that we love it because Nissan took great care not to distort the car, merely to project it into the 21st century. The engine changes, not the passion.
