MG Prepares for a Price War

The faster the rise, the tougher the fall could be. As the loss of the Eco Bonus for its models looms, the Sino-British manufacturer is sharpening its tools.

MG climbed onto the third step of the podium among electric vehicle manufacturers in 2023. With 2,954 registered cars, almost one in ten electric cars sold in France in September was a MG. These good results are, of course, largely due to the remarkable success of the MG4, which makes it into the Top 20 best-selling vehicles of all energy types with 1,993 registrations in September 2023.

In total, 20,827 new MGs have hit the road in France this year, representing a growth of 219.2% compared to the same period last year.

The goals announced at the start of the year by MG Motor have already been achieved three months ahead of schedule. The Sino-British brand reached over 20,000 deliveries by the end of September, and with a 1.5% market share since January 1, the manufacturer is well ahead of the projected timeline.

The company, founded a century ago, has become a major player in the market, respected and feared. Even better, MG’s electric vehicles have achieved a level of quality that many manufacturers envy. A dynamic sales network and clear, relevant offers have sealed the deal. Such success can only be annoying when considering that MG’s commercial success is largely due to the Eco Bonus available for cars produced in China. The new rules effective December 15 are expected to slow down this growth. Unless MG has a card up its sleeve!

Whether on the manufacturer’s website or on classified pages of its dealers, it’s impossible to find a promotion on a new, unregistered MG electric car. 5 to 10% discounts here and there on hybrid HES or entry-level ZS models, but nothing comparable to the 30% Daily Promotions the others manufacturers often offer.

MG probably still has some tricks up its sleeve and should soon unveil attractive offers starting December 15. Even without the Eco Bonus, a MG4 XPOWER remains the cheapest sporty electric car on the market and the MG5 station wagon has no equal in price/performance on the market.
