MG Prepares to Face the Bonus Storm

Next December 15th, the entire MG electric range is expected to lose its eligibility for the Eco Bonus.

A quick visit to MG Motor’s French website leaves no doubt about the manufacturer’s hopes. The brand is ramping up offers and discounts until… December 15, 2023, the fateful date when the list of models eligible for the new French Eco Bonus will be unveiled.

Does this mean the end of the Love Story between MG and the French public? In October, the Tesla Model Y was surpassed by the MG4, the inexpensive Chinese electric compact, which is taking France by storm, with 1,864 units sold. It’s hard to imagine that this has nothing to do with the upcoming loss of the Eco Bonus… Hence this very clear communication from the Sino-British manufacturer: Order quickly before December 15th and choose a delivery date possible until March 15, 2024.

Unlike Tesla, which ramps up promotions and discounts, MG has always announced prices and stuck to them. And it works! At 40,000 euros after all subsidies, the MG4 XPower remains the most affordable family dragster on the market, capable of covering 380 km after accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. At 45,000 euros, the Marvel R Luxury can confidently match the Peugeot E-3008 and the new Renault Scenic.

MG Holds Its Ground

The French electric vehicle market continues to perform well, driven by the three best-sellers MG MG4, Tesla Model Y, and Dacia Spring. Last month, it accounted for 17.2% of registrations, a 50% increase over 12 months. It is likely that MG will unveil a new wave of promotions on December 15th, allowing its models to remain competitive while awaiting the localization of its production in Europe and the re-eligibility for the Bonus. A year or two of flexibility should not be an insurmountable challenge for this century-old brand.
