MG has an electric car under €20,000 ready to go
The Chinese-British manufacturer MG took the opportunity at the Geneva Motor Show to confirm the development of an affordable electric car.
Bad news for French manufacturers, MG is indeed going to release a €20,000 electric car to compete with the Citroën Ë-C3, Dacia Spring, and Renault Twingo electric models. The icing on the cake, this « MG2 » could arrive very quickly.
It’s almost a tautology, but the main trend for electric cars in the coming years is that of affordable prices. The €25,000 mark is already quite tangible with the new Renault 5 E-Tech, but even better prices will be needed.
This €20,000 barrier has long been broken for thermal models. More recently, hybrids have managed to find their place, as proven by the latest addition from the brand, the MG3. But an electric that can compete with these models at similar prices remains a sweet dream.
The battleground of tomorrow
David Allison, product and development manager at MG, confirmed what has long since ceased to be a rumor. “There is a huge opportunity in the current market for a four-meter electric car around €20,000, he declared to the gathered media at the MG stand, before adding. I think if someone launches such a car with acceptable range it will be a success. Why not us?” Coach also clarified that a concept already exists in MG’s London design studio, and that bringing it to market in less than two years is not utopian. At least the current models will have a few months to find their customers!
This « MG2 » should be a car designed and developed by and for Europe. There is no doubt, however, that it will still be produced in China at the SAIC factories, like all other MGs, which will exclude it from the ecological bonus in France.
