In Norway, 9.64 out of 10 new cars are electric

In September 2024, a quarter of the new cars sold in Norway were Tesla, while combustion engines have nearly disappeared.
Norway, once famous for its Trolls, is now also known for its Tesla cars that have literally invaded the streets of the country. The situation is somewhat amusing: this Nordic country earns most of its revenue by exploiting fossil resources to pollute the planet, yet strongly encourages electric driving at home. This schizophrenia aptly summarizes the demagoguery of our modern Western societies.
The status of global leader in the transition to electric vehicles is something Norway has been working on for years now. Initially through very strong tax incentives, buyers do not pay import tax (there is no automotive industry in the country), nor the 25% VAT and registration fees.
In practice, the “rewards” are also numerous: discounts on road tolls, ferries, and the allowance to use certain reserved lanes in cities.
Cheap Electricity
A final compelling argument for switching to electric is that Norway produces cheap energy, primarily from its hydroelectric dams. The difference in bills compared to gasoline or diesel is massive. Moreover, a large majority of Norwegians live in detached houses, which greatly facilitates the charging process.
Finally, with determination, Norway aims to be the first country in the world to ban combustion engine vehicles… as early as 2025. Will it be able to stick to this goal? Judging by the sales figures from September 2024, it seems likely: 12,966 cars sold, of which 12,495 were electric, representing a market share of 96.4%! Among these, 4,210 were Tesla, or nearly 33% of the market. Impressive!
In a market like France, Tesla sold 63,041 cars in 2023, representing a market share of 3.5%. Almost 10 times less than in Norway. This gives an idea of the enormous sales potential ahead for Tesla, while competitors will, at best, manage to convert their customers from combustion engines to electric. However, it is already known that this will not be the case, as too many new players, particularly from China, are set to enter and eat into sales.
