In Germany, ALL Tesla Model Y cars are discounted by €6000.

Following the removal of the ecological bonus in Germany, Tesla pays the difference to lower the price of all its Model Y by 6000 euros.

We already hear the criticisms: “who cares about Germany” or “it’s even cheaper in France“. The logic lies elsewhere, and it is therefore necessary to zoom out of the situation. The automotive market is a game of deception between seller and buyer, that is, between a manufacturer and a motorist.

We could also add public finances to this equation, which today are literally abused by providing ecological bonuses to electric vehicles whose production is now less expensive than a thermal equivalent. For proof, never has a vehicle as modern and well-equipped as a Tesla Model Y cost less than 60,000 euros just ten years ago…

This game of deception continues in 2024, and the slow but confirmed disappearance of the ecological bonus in various European countries is evidence of this. Firstly, because there is no more money in the coffers and mindsets have initiated the acceptance that it is necessary to abandon fossil fuels to move around. A matter of health and climate warming, but also of purchasing power.

Huge Tesla discounts in Germany

At Mobiwisy, we like to keep an eye on the commercial practices of Tesla and others abroad, always factoring in VAT and bonuses. After Belgium, and also Spain, let’s take a little tour in Germany… where European Tesla Model Y are produced.

As we mentioned in the introduction, the ecological bonus disappeared there at the end of 2023. Budgetary urgency is directed more towards public services than private cars… German pragmatism seems to hit before France.

Interestingly, Tesla has decided to compensate for the effect of the bonus with its own funds. Two pieces of information about this: a car like the Model Y would not find a buyer at around 50,000 euros, even in Germany where purchasing power is one of the highest in the world. Secondly, Tesla does not sell at a loss, so the American manufacturer still has “fat around its belly.” What about the relevance of the bonus once again?

In France, Tesla regularly offers promotions of around 4000 euros on its Model Y Propulsion… in stock only! Not those on order. Not the clever wasp! Only savvy buyers benefit from the promotions, and one must hurry to buy in order to seize the opportunity of the rare discounted units available for sale. You don’t catch flies with vinegar.

The same mechanism applies in Germany: no discount on a custom-ordered unit, only on pre-configured stocks sitting in the lots. The goal is to aim for just-in-time production everywhere. But the difference with France is that ALL Model Y benefit from the current 6000 euro discount offered by Tesla. Propulsion, Long Range Propulsion, Long Range All-Wheel Drive and Performance variants. Certainly, they remain as expensive as in France, but that is not the debate here.

So it is 2000 euros more than in France. Why not equal treatment everywhere? In France, between a 4000 euro bonus, a super bonus of 6000 euros from Tesla, we would already reach a 10,000 euro deduction from the price. Add to that an additional 3000 euros for low incomes, a conversion bonus of 1500 euros, and 1000 euros related to a referral, and the total would be perfect: -15,500 euros, which would bring the price of a Model Y down to 31,490 euros.
