Will MG offer cheaper batteries starting in 2025?

Bewildered by the sanctions imposed by the European Commission, MG has no choice but to innovate to survive in Europe.
MG, the British car brand now flying the Chinese flag under the SAIC group, is about to take a major step in the development of its electric models. A SAIC official confirmed that MG will launch a solid-state battery electric vehicle in the second quarter of 2025, significantly ahead of its Chinese and European competitors.
Solid-state batteries, often considered the next big innovation in electric technology, offer key advantages over current batteries. They provide much higher energy density, which could lead to significantly greater ranges. Additionally, they are safer due to the absence of flammable liquid electrolytes, eliminating fire risk. Finally, they charge faster, enhancing user experience.
Although MG has not yet revealed the precise details of this battery, record ranges of close to 1000 km with modules under 100 kWh are already anticipated, along with nearly 500 km of range recovered in 10 minutes. But beyond these enticing figures, SAIC’s main goal with this technological breakthrough is to reduce costs. Ultimately, solid-state batteries could be up to 30% cheaper than current LFP batteries, making electric vehicles more affordable. The brand no longer benefits from the Eco Bonus, and considering the additional customs duties affecting all brands in the SAIC Group, which amount to around 35%, you can see how important the introduction of this technology is for the Chinese giant. Meanwhile, the priority remains the deployment of the hybrid range, which does not face any penalties.
