Catheram Project V

Caterham announces the presentation of its first functional prototype, Project V, at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026.

Caterham is set to unveil the first rolling prototype of its Project V on January 9, 2026. A significant milestone in the development of the model, this prototype embodies the British manufacturer’s vision for a 100% electric sports coupe. But will it stay true to the lightweight and dynamic DNA that has defined the brand?

Assembled at a research center in Japan, the vehicle is currently undergoing a battery of tests. These include initial durability assessments of the chassis as well as tests of the electric powertrain supplied by Yamaha. The Japanese brand will benefit from its experience gained in Formula E. This phase is crucial to ensure that the Project V can eventually go into large-scale production while delivering performance and reliability that meet Caterham’s standards.

The prototype also features advanced battery technology with the CTP (Cell-to-Pack) system, in which the cells are immersed in a dielectric fluid. This innovative method allows for rapid and uniform cooling, ensuring optimal thermal stability, high energy density, and sustained performance while guaranteeing the safety of the vehicle.

Serious partners

In parallel, Caterham is collaborating with XING Mobility, a technical partner specializing in battery system optimization, and plans to showcase the powertrain of the Project V in the United States during CES in Las Vegas on January 6, 2026. This dual launch, in Japan and the U.S., highlights the international ambition of the project and the brand’s commitment to showcasing its technological expertise.

Founded in 1973 after acquiring the rights to the Lotus Seven, Caterham has always stood out for its lightweight and high-performance sports cars. Beyond the artisanal production of its iconic models, the brand has engaged in one-make championships and innovative projects. With the Project V, Caterham is crossing a historic threshold: the electrification of its sporting DNA. However, one question remains open: will the brand succeed in translating the philosophy of lightness and agility of the Seven into a more complex and heavier electric coupe?

According to Kazuho Takahashi, CEO of Caterham Cars, he is confident, “this prototype marks a significant milestone in the development of Project V. It allows us to launch a comprehensive testing program with our technical partners. Our goal remains to create a pure electric vehicle that retains Caterham’s distinctive DNA.”
