The BYD Tang Breaks Its Range Records

BYD’s large electric SUV, the Tang, is experiencing a significant battery upgrade that boosts its range by 25% instantly.

It is certainly not the most elegant nor the most affordable electric SUV. Starting at €70,800 in France, the BYD Tang with 7 seats is not expected to achieve high commercial volume. The smaller ATTO 3 or the compact city car Dolphin will be the spearheads of the European invasion of the world’s leading electric car manufacturer, now ahead of Tesla.

Nevertheless, as a flagship, the BYD Tang has the mission of showcasing the Chinese brand’s technological prowess. Launched in 2022, it has just received a major update after barely more than a year. This highlights the appeal of electric cars: like a smartphone, they can constantly evolve.

AN XXL BATTERY

The BYD Tang is replacing its original 86 kWh battery with a larger capacity one: 108 kWh! Sufficient to increase its WLTP European range from 400 to 530 km. With its XXL size, the Tang is indeed energy-hungry.

A larger battery also means the potential for longer charging times. To address this, the charging capacity has been upgraded as well, with an onboard charger increasing from 7 to 11 kW in alternating current, and up to 190 kW in direct current.

NEXT: A PRICE DROP?

The power of the electric motors remains at 517 horsepower, and the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration is slightly slower due to the additional mass of the new battery. The time has increased from 4.5 to 4.9 seconds.

Could this updated version of the BYD Tang be accompanied by a sharp decrease in its price in the coming weeks? That cannot be ruled out.
