2024 Tesla Range Significantly Decreases

Tesla has updated the range of its 2024 models in the United States, with reductions of up to 60 kilometers. Why?

This is an update that won’t please Tesla’s marketing team but, in reality, won’t change the intrinsic qualities of their cars.

In the United States, new regulations for the certification of electric vehicles will change — for some — data such as the range. This is the case for Tesla, whose most models, except for the currently being refreshed Model 3, display reduced range.

Two reasons explain this: the height-adjustable air suspension and the intensity of the accelerations. Now, all driving modes are included in the range calculation, from the most economical to the most sporty. The same applies to ride height, which can adjust based on speed to improve aerodynamics.

Up to 60 km less!

An average of all consumptions is then calculated, determining the new official range of these models. Some seem unaffected, such as the Model Y Long Range.

Additionally, Tesla states — without specifying — that some models will consume slightly more energy in 2024 to power onboard systems (infotainment? Autonomous driving?). No technical changes in the batteries, just a different certification and usage of them.

Thus, the Model Y Long Range and Performance see their range reduced by 20 and 18 miles (32 and 29 kilometers), respectively. The Model S Plaid experiences the largest loss: -37 miles, or -59.5 km. Finally, the Model X loses 13 miles (21 km), with the Plaid version losing 7 miles (11 km). No information on the Cybertruck either, which probably already incorporates this new range calculation method, hence the relative disappointment during its presentation.

These data currently only concern the United States, but what about future European models regarding battery “usage”?
