EuroNCAP Crash Test: The Cupra Born Excels, the BMW i4 Misses the 5-Star Rating

The Euro NCAP determined that the driving assistance systems of the i4 were not effective enough to award it the top star.

Since the criteria were revised, it has become more difficult to achieve 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. BMW faces this challenge, as its i4 did not manage to obtain the maximum score.

The German electric sedan scored well in occupant protection for both front and rear passengers. It was less convincing in pedestrian protection and especially lost significant points in driving assistance features. Euro NCAP notably criticized the lane-keeping assist, which was deemed to operate erratically.

BMW probably expected a better rating. Nonetheless, there’s no need to panic, as an average score in the Euro NCAP crash test does not necessarily have a significant impact on future safety evaluations. Many successful Stellantis models have settled for 4 stars (Peugeot 208 and 308, DS 4, etc).

5 stars for the Cupra Born

Euro NCAP also evaluated the Cupra Born. The Cupra’s compact electric vehicle achieved the maximum 5-star rating, despite a mediocre score in vulnerable road user protection. Since the beginning of the year, electric cars have generally satisfied Euro NCAP experts. The Kia EV6, Volvo C40 Recharge, and Renault Megane E-Tech all earned 5 stars.
