In Singapore, the spotlight shines on the track and the F1 cars, but rarely on the outcome of the weekend. As the seventeenth round of the 2026 championship, Marina Bay hosts a Formula 1 that has barely recovered from Max Verstappen’s surprise victory in Sepang. From October 9 to 11, heat, humidity, and the closeness of the walls promise a new test of nerves.

Introduced to the calendar in 2008, Singapore kicked off the night races. Its inaugural edition, won by Fernando Alonso, is forever linked to “Crashgate,” the deliberate crash by his teammate Nelson Piquet Jr. Since then, the event has established itself as one of the most challenging of the season, with long races where the slightest mistake can be costly.

This year, the Sprint format adds a difficulty: only one practice session to find the right settings before the first qualifying rounds. This increases the opportunities to score but also the chances of mistakes.

Russell against the wall

Winner here in 2025, George Russell arrives with an 84-point deficit to Kimi Antonelli. His retirement in Malaysia has seriously compromised his ambitions, and the announced engine change condemns him to start from the back of the grid on Sunday. The Sprint, to which this penalty does not apply, thus becomes a valuable opportunity to limit the damage.

Antonelli can, on the other hand, take another step toward the title. But Verstappen intends to extend his momentum, while Lewis Hamilton hopes to confirm the speed shown in Sepang. The British driver, who secured a memorable pole in Singapore in 2018, knows how crucial confidence is between these walls. Here, certainties often hold until the first barrier.
