DENZA BAO 5: BYD’s Plug-in Hybrid SUV Arrives in France
With the BAO 5, the young premium brand DENZA, owned by BYD, is preparing to make its first steps in the European market.
Expected in France before the end of the year, this 4.89 m DENZA plug-in hybrid SUV adopts a philosophy clearly oriented towards off-road capability, in a segment long dominated by references such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Defender, or Jeep Wrangler.
The DENZA BAO 5 is based on the plug-in hybrid DMO platform developed by BYD. Its architecture combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine with two electric motors, one on each axle, for a combined power of 544 hp and a maximum torque of 760 Nm. Thanks to this electrified all-wheel drive system, the manufacturer claims a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 4.8 seconds.
The technical part also utilizes a ladder chassis, a configuration that has become rare in the market but is still appreciated for off-road uses. The BAO 5 also features two electronic differentials, a central locking system, and on the Ultimate trim, intelligent hydraulic suspension DiSus-P capable of increasing ground clearance up to 310 mm.
DENZA Multicards
The 31.8 kWh Blade battery allows for up to 90 km in 100% electric mode according to the WLTP cycle. DENZA claims a combined range of up to 835 km with a full tank and an official consumption of 4.2 l/100 km.
Inside, the BAO 5 boasts a particularly comprehensive set of equipment starting from the Elegance trim, priced from €75,630. The SUV includes a 12.3-inch digital display, a 15.6-inch central screen integrating Google services, a second screen dedicated to the front passenger, a head-up display, an 18-speaker Devialet audio system, as well as heated, ventilated, and massaging electric seats.
An Ultimate version, starting from €85,720, adds features such as Nappa leather upholstery, 20-inch wheels, electrically retractable running boards, and active suspension DiSus-P.
