BYD Da Han: 1,000 km of range and a thing to kill hybrids

With its ultra-fast charging, the new BYD Da Han shows that the future of electric cars is no longer just about range.

While European manufacturers refine their large electric sedans, BYD is going on the offensive. The Chinese giant has just unveiled the first official images of the Da Han, its new flagship. A 5.26-meter-long limousine that has XXL ambitions: up to 1,008 km of range, 764 hp, and a charging time touted as revolutionary.

Also known as the Great Han, this large sedan becomes the new flagship of the Dynasty lineup. At 5.256 meters long, it even surpasses a standard Mercedes S-Class by 66 mm. This detail is far from trivial in the Chinese market, where prestige is also measured by size.

Its design remains faithful to BYD’s style, featuring a very sleek front end, “Dragon Whiskers” light signatures, an elegant roofline, and cutting-edge technologies like roof-mounted LiDAR, four-wheel steering, and the DiPilot 5.0 driving assistance system.

Under the hood, the numbers are mind-boggling. The rear-wheel-drive version generates 496 hp and boasts a range of 1,008 km, while the all-wheel-drive variant reaches 764 hp with a range of 880 km.

The Numbers Don’t Lie!

Impressive performance… which should, however, be put into perspective. The 1,008 km is certified according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, which is much more favorable than our WLTP standard. In Europe, such a sedan would likely show a range between 750 and 850 km for more than 600 km of real highway driving. A figure less spectacular on paper, but already more than sufficient to cover the needs of almost all drivers.

For the real revolution may no longer be the range. It’s called charging.

Thanks to its new megawatt electric architecture, BYD claims a charging time from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes on a compatible charger. In other words, the time to take a short break, grab a coffee, and get back on the road. For high-mileage drivers, the convenience of use then becomes very close to that of a combustion engine vehicle.

This evolution could indeed call into question the relevance of plug-in hybrids. If an electric car already offers nearly 800 km of real range and retrieves the majority of its energy in just a few minutes, the supplementary combustion engine gradually loses its purpose.
