French People Are Increasingly Fond of Electric Cars

In May 2026, electric car registrations reached a new record level in France.

According to the latest data from AAA Data, 128,484 new passenger cars were registered during the month, representing an increase of 4% compared to May 2025, despite a lower number of working days. However, since the beginning of the year, the market remains slightly down with 668,378 registrations, a decrease of 1%.

The main trend of the month is the spectacular growth of electric vehicles. With 37,412 registrations, 100% electric cars now account for 29% of the new vehicle market, compared to just 16% a year earlier. Among private individuals, electric vehicles are even more appealing: one in three purchases now concerns a battery model, representing a market share of 34%.

Thermal engines are struggling

This dynamic is driven by government aids, notably the “Boost for Electric Passenger Vehicles” grant and the return of social leasing. The regulatory pressure on manufacturers within the framework of European emission targets also contributes to accelerating the delivery of electric models.

At the same time, thermal engines continue their decline. Registrations of gasoline cars have dropped by 37% to 18,926 units, while diesel has collapsed by 52%, with only 3,291 vehicles registered. Hybrids remain the leading energy source in the market with 49% of registrations, but their growth is limited to 1%.

The used car market also reflects this evolution. While overall transactions have decreased by 4%, sales of used electric cars more than doubled in May. This is another signal confirming that the French are increasingly adopting electric vehicles.
