Tight budgets, confusing subsidies, absurd bans. Getting around is a headache for 8 out of 10 French people.

Between shrinking budgets and increasingly complex aid schemes, the mobility of the French has turned into an obstacle course. According to an OpinionWay study for Aramisauto, 8 out of 10 motorists say they feel at a loss in the face of constant changes to public subsidies, and a majority reject low-emission zones (LEZs), judged too restrictive.

The budget devoted to buying a car falls to €238 per month on average, and €210 for low-income households, its lowest level since 2022. This economic pressure is pushing the French to adapt their behaviours: reduce trips, delay maintenance, or favour used vehicles.

Used cars are establishing themselves as the most accessible solution. 80% of French people now plan to buy a used vehicle, while reconditioned models are gaining in popularity: 75% know them and 77% consider them more reliable than traditional used cars. Attractive price, durability and reliability make them a credible alternative, especially for low-income households.

More simplicity for better driving

Electric and hybrid vehicles are also attractive: more than one in two motorists plan this type of powertrain for their next purchase. The French want extended aid for used electric vehicles (68%) and guarantees on range or battery lifespan (58%).

With the local elections in sight, local authorities are seen as key players. 94% of the French want their future mayor to prioritise mobility in their program, whether through support for buying used cars, improving parking, or developing public transport.
