Cable Car: Is the Aerial Tram Back in Vogue?
This page is translated from the original post "Câble 1 : le téléphérique de nouveau dans l’air du temps ?" in French.

By opening the future cable car line « Câble 1 », the Île-de-France region aims to alleviate the isolation of towns in Val-de-Marne.
For the average person, the cable car is synonymous with winter skiing holidays. However, this mode of transportation is not only linked to Alpine resorts. In Medellín (Colombia), the « Metrocable » has been a cornerstone of mobility since 2004, carrying 14 million people annually across 6 lines. It has been influential throughout South America, and is also present in Europe, including London.
In France, the most famous cable car outside ski resorts is the Grenoble Bastille, inaugurated in 1934 and still in operation. In Brest, it is also a means of crossing the Penfeld River. But again, these two lines are primarily tourist attractions.
Cable 1 to alleviate city isolation
The first real urban cable car service will be in the Paris metropolitan area, and the first in the entire region. Île-de-France Mobilités launched the Cable A project in 2016, renamed « Câble 1 » or C1 following the nomenclature of other transports like Metro M14 or tram T1.

This line will connect the towns of Créteil (end of Metro Line 8) and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, in Val-de-Marne (94), southeast of Paris. The Câble 1 will also pass through Limeil-Brévannes and Valenton, “enclaved” according to the local authorities. Five stops are planned along the line, with a total duration of 18 minutes.
Each cabin will seat 10 people, and will also be able to carry bicycles or wheelchairs. The cabins will be dispatched every 30 seconds, allowing a flow of 1,600 travelers per hour.
Why a cable car instead of a bus?
This choice of a cable car over a new tramway, a trolleybus or bus line was made to “minimize the project’s environmental impact”, whether in terms of noise or landscape. It is also ideal for flying over highways or high-voltage lines.

After 3 years of consultation and 3 years of surveys and studies, Câble 1 or C1 will begin construction in 2022. This new mode of transport does not yet have a launch date. It will probably have to wait until 2025 at the earliest.
