Voltaire Bellecour: The Simplified (and Cheaper) Parisian Electric Bike

Initially launched in a highly connected version, the Voltaire electric bike returns in a simpler, less expensive Bellecour version, just as attractive.

Born in Paris, Voltaire launched its first bike in April 2021, after the third lockdown. After meeting its audience, co-founders Grégoire Lieurade and Julien Dassault are launching their second e-bike model.

The Courcelles remains in the catalog

By naming its first model Courcelles (the brand’s neighborhood), Voltaire introduced the Bellecour. The Courcelles was a connected bike with a screen linked to an app managing location via GPS beacon. The brand also guaranteed theft protection and damage coverage. Additionally, the app unlocked the bike remotely, provided updates on any bike movement, and triggered an alarm in case of recidivism.

However, not everyone necessarily needs all this equipment. While some customers want to sleep soundly, others prefer simplicity. Moreover, the screen was not touch-sensitive and required using the phone to switch modes, which was its weakness.

The Voltaire Bellecour launches the range

This is why the Bellecour removes the screen and connectivity from the bike. It retains all the charm of the original model: large frame tubes, chrome-finished components, brown leather saddle and grips for a guaranteed vintage look. However, the Voltaire Bellecour loses the front light molded into the stem that mimicked old cars, in favor of a standard non-integrated light.

The handlebar is specific, less bulky as it does not include a screen, yet still high to provide a comfortable position, ideal for city rides. The chrome bell remains, and mode navigation is now operated via a small control on the right of the handlebar and a mini OLED display.

An more affordable price for the Voltaire bike

On the technical side, nothing changes. The rear motor drives a flexible Gates belt and provides 55 Nm torque. The battery remains in an unusual location—inside the saddle tube. When lifting this, a strap allows removal for charging at home without directly plugging in the bike. With a capacity of 360 Wh, the battery theoretically offers 40 to 70 km, depending on mode and usage.

Finally, the idea is that fewer components lead to a more accessible price. This is the case, as the Voltaire Bellecour is priced at €2,190. This is €200 less than the connected Courcelles model. Not available for rental options, but it still includes a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty and can be delivered free of charge in France. Like the Courcelles, the Bellecour offers options such as a front basket, rear rack, Axa lock chain, second charger, or additional battery.

Note that the bike remains with a semi-open frame and is designed for a height of 1.55 to 1.80 m (according to the brand). Three color options are available, with green and blue retained but white replacing black. Production is still French, at the Cycleurope factory in Romilly-sur-Seine (Aube).
