Incat Utility Ro-Pax: the world’s largest electric boat!
This page is translated from the original post "Incat Utility Ro-Pax : le plus gros bateau électrique au monde !" in French.

His name is Incat Utility Ro-Pax and it is the largest 100% electric boat. It’s the fish that will be happy!
There is a lot of talk about greenhouse gas emissions and pollutant discharges from cars, but unfortunately, marine pollution is a topic that is much less discussed and remains critical. Besides illegal ballast dumping, which is common, motorized boats are a disaster for marine ecosystems. The federation France Nature Environnement has estimated that a cruise ship roughly 300 meters long releases as many fine particles and nitrogen oxides as one million cars. Yes, you read that right. One million cars! Maritime transport accounts for 3% of global travel and even 12% at the European level. The International Maritime Organization also aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2025.
To combat this scourge, the advent of electric motors, though far from solving all problems, should nevertheless help alleviate the seas. It is in this context that the Australian company Incat Tasmania launched the Utility Ro-Pax project. This large vessel with futuristic lines measures 148 meters in length and could carry up to 2,100 passengers in a less polluting environment.
Powerful but not very enduring

Developed with Revolution Design, the Utility Ro-Pax ship is equipped with two enormous electric motors with a power ranging between 5 and 9.6 Megawatts, located under the hull of the vessel. The capacity of the batteries has not been specified, but they represent a total mass of 400 tons, compared to 500 tons for a more traditional thermal architecture. The Incat Utility Ro-Pax makes extensive use of aluminum to reduce its weight and could reach a maximum speed of 25 knots. Fully charged batteries, it could travel 100 nautical miles, about 185 km. However, this is insufficient to connect Corsica from Marseille. Such an electric ship would therefore be destined for shorter routes, such as linking Greek islands, for example. Besides its capacity to carry passengers, this electric boat could also accommodate up to 226 vehicles.
The production of the Incat Utility Ro-Pax is set for 2025.
