MG added a version to its catalog: the MG4 Luxury Extended Range promising 520 kilometers per charge for only €34,490.

The price war is just beginning, but it looks set to be relentless. The main beneficiary will therefore be the consumer, until the state calls time on subsidies for somewhat expensive electric cars that are out of scope for the average budget in France. The price of a new car was €27,000 in 2019… before skyrocketing to €32,600 in 2022 under the pretext of component shortages and the war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, MG continues its march forward, even if it shakes up the market where some historic players cannot keep up. In early July 2023, the Sino-British company added a new model to its lineup: the MG4 Luxury Extended Range. Based on the Luxury trim, it adds a contrasting black roof, a more powerful motor (180 kW versus 150 kW initially, or 245 hp versus 204 hp), and most importantly, a larger capacity battery. This one increases from 64 to 77 kWh, boosting its range from 435 to 520 km. No more tethers for charging.

The increased power is partly justified by the added weight, which goes from 1672 to 1748 kg, an increase of 76 kg. Nonetheless, performance also improves, with 0 to 100 km/h acceleration dropping to 6.5 seconds from 7.9 seconds for the 64 kWh model. The top speed also rises to 180 km/h from 160 km/h for the standard model. Additionally, the extreme XPOWER version allows speeds up to 200 km/h.

Since the battery is more substantial, charging is subtly faster too, allowing up to 144 kWh compared to 140 kWh for the 64 kWh version. This means that recharging from 10% to 80% takes 38 minutes versus 26 minutes for the 64 kWh model.

If equipment remains highly complete in both cases — including heat pump, heated front seats and faux leather, heated steering wheel, 360° camera, GPS, trip planner, pre-heating of the battery, 18-inch wheels, electrically adjustable driver’s seat (6 directions), tinted windows, active grille shutters to improve aerodynamics, etc. — it is noteworthy that this increase in range comes at a significant cost.

Priced at €34,490 after deducting the €5,000 eco-bonus (or €32,490 if you scrap an old combustion engine car), the MG4 Luxury Extended Range charges €5,500 for its large battery and an additional 85 km of driving range. Attractive on paper, is this version really worth it? It does have the merit of alleviating the anxiety of running out of charge.
