The Mountain Law Returns
This page is translated from the original post "La Loi Montagne revient" in French.

Starting November 1, 2023, and until March 31, 2024, the Mountain Law is activated. What are your obligations?
In 34 departments of France, compared to the originally planned 48 departments, the Mountain Law will be implemented starting tomorrow to enhance user safety. According to the law, drivers traveling in these departments must be equipped with 4 snow tires or have chains/snow socks. Winter tires are those marked with 3PMSF and/or M+S.
Signage indicates to road users the entry into an area where equipment obligations apply.

If you do not comply with these obligations, you risk a fine of 135 euros and immobilization of your vehicle. In theory only, as again this year no fines are expected to be issued for violations. The Ministry of Transport prefers to raise awareness among motorists rather than penalize, which is a commendable approach but risky in our country of stubborn Gauls.
Remember that this measure in no way interferes with your freedom to travel but aims solely to ensure your safety in perilous driving conditions. Most Eastern European countries have made snow tires mandatory during winter, a practice that has become customary and sensible given its good sense.
