Renault Scenic: First Major Victory Over Peugeot E-3008

The trade war between the Renault Scenic and Peugeot E-3008 will energize the French market in 2024. The prices of each are known.

We previously detailed the technical differences between the two rival electric SUVs. Renault opts for pragmatism with battery sizes aligned with real needs, while Peugeot offers XXL ranges to break the psychological barrier of breakdowns.

The first selling point of a car is obviously its price. On this front, the Scenic confirms its ambition to disrupt the market with an entry price of €34,990 (after a €5,000 bonus deduction). Be aware that with the promise of a reduction in ecological bonus in the coming weeks, electric cars will soon be less (artificially) affordable.

On the other side, the Peugeot E-3008 starts at €39,990, also with bonus deducted, making it €5,000 more expensive. However, it’s still worth examining in detail what each offers in each case.

Renault Scenic

The base “Evolution” version offers 170 horsepower and a 60 kWh battery. It promises a range of 430 km in WLTP mixed cycle. The onboard charger accepts 7 kW, with up to 130 kW on a fast DC station.

The basic equipment meets standard expectations, without any particular extravagance, but you can’t have everything in life. The base color is Flame Red.

Ultimately, the Renault Scenic Evolution 170 hp is a coherent offer for a family who doesn’t want to break the bank on a station wagon. It will still offer significant fuel savings without compromising on style or equipment.

Peugeot E-3008

The announcement of its prices was highly anticipated. It took a few days after the Renault Scenic’s prices to be revealed…

Right from the start, the Peugeot E-3008 leans more towards the dream of power with a rated output of 210 horsepower. That’s 40 more than the Renault Scenic. A significant choice when we consider a vehicle with a battery weight exceeding 2 tonnes when loaded (1747 kg for Renault, 2183 kg empty for Peugeot, an 436 kg difference!).

Still, €5,000 separate the Lion from the SUV with the diamond. Peugeot mainly explains this by a “small battery” of 73 kWh and a claimed 527 km range. The Long Range version goes up to 98 kWh for a range of 700 km.

The onboard charger delivers 11 kW, allowing slightly faster recharging.

Available from April 2024, the E-3008 in Allure finish offers a pretty metallic blue color. Equipment-wise, it’s very well equipped too:

CONCLUSION

The features onboard are therefore very similar between the two cars. At first glance, one might think that design and price will play their usual roles. €5,000 is no small amount, but a 14% difference that battery size alone cannot justify.

Indeed, Peugeot’s range is 100 km greater, but the time to recover this gap at a fast charger is about 10 minutes. And larger batteries also imply higher recharging costs. The 400 kg difference between Renault and Peugeot is also surprising, and the agility of the E-3008 could be disappointing.

Finally, the trunk volume is a concern. Because homologation requires a “under the hatch” volume, both vehicles offer nearly identical capacities: 545 liters for the Scenic, 520 liters for the E-3008. But if you load to the maximum, the more standard profile of Renault will provide additional liters that the “coupe” shape of Peugeot cannot. Storage volume is also one of the key criteria when choosing a vehicle of this size…

In the end, the Renault Scenic achieves a first victory primarily thanks to very carefully considered relevance.
