Lidl launches a ultra-stylish electric bike for €1199 — a top deal?

The German giant in discount retail Lidl is diversifying with an offer of two bikes with high or open frames at discount prices.

This is a formidable competitor to the market leader in cycling in France and Europe, Decathlon.

On the domestic market—in Germany—where there is an increasing interest in daily eco-mobility—retail giant Lidl is relaunching its electric bike offer, the Crivit Urban E-Bike. A high-frame model X.2 (mainly for him) and an open-frame version Y.2 (mainly for her). A chromosomal naming not very tasteful these days, but that’s a minor detail.

At first glance, one might wonder: what’s the point of an electric bike costing over 1000 euros? But there are several on the market.

Beautiful and efficient?

The first feature is the presence of an electronic torque sensor that adapts the assistance in real-time based on your needs and the slope of the road. No need to change gears; everything is automatic. The 360-watt battery, housed in the seat tube, promises up to 100 km of range. An almost too-good-to-be-true score, but even 60 km of real life range would already be quite impressive.

The electric motor located in the rear hub provides up to 45 Nm of torque, a standard value, nothing extraordinary. Note that the transmission is belt-driven rather than chain-driven, which makes maintenance and keeping the lower part of your pants clean easier. Three assistance modes are offered: ECO, TOUR, and RACE, plus a BOOST function that guarantees maximum power for 20 seconds.

An integrated smartphone holder, a GPS tracker slot, a rear rack, mudguards, and high-power lighting (including a rare backlit stop light!) are standard equipment.

With a total weight of 21 kg, the Lidl Crivit Urban E-Bike Y.2 and X.2 are not light, but they are undoubtedly durable. That’s the main thing.

Finally, be aware that subsidies are available for purchasing an electric bike. These subsidies continue to decrease, so be sure to check your eligibility on the French government website.
