Incredible power for the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD

We now know why the acceleration of the Tesla Model Y Long Range version is so impressive.

During its presentation in spring 2024, the first focus was naturally on the range. Of course, since that was the leitmotif of this Tesla Model Y Long Range.

On this point, a huge surprise: from 455 km in the Standard version, the range increased to 600 km with the Long Range. This is an increase of 145 km. All for a reasonable additional cost of only 2000 euros in France.

The price did indeed rise from 44,990 to 46,990 euros, from which the 4000 euros environmental bonus must be deducted. This means 40,990 and 42,990 euros respectively in France in 2024. What about the future if the bonus is reduced further, or even disappears…

A power equivalent to a Porsche 911

Aesthetically, nothing distinguishes one version from the other. The technical specifications are intriguing because, despite its higher capacity battery, the Long Range is officially 25 kg lighter than the basic Standard. Surprising!

Finally, there is the acceleration parameter, as Tesla made sure to accompany this range increase with better performance. It wasn’t necessary, but it is what it is…

And here, another surprise, as the 0 to 100 km/h sprint is achieved in 1 second less than the Model Y Standard. From 6.9 seconds, the Long Range drops to 5.9 seconds. The energy required to propel an electric SUV weighing over 2 tons (including the driver) is significant. Even more to gain 1 second on the same acceleration task.

By digging into Tesla’s technical sheets, we understand that the electric motor of the Model Y Standard, located at the rear, sees its power explode. From 220 kW (299 hp), it rises to 255 kW (346 hp), which is more than the power of a Porsche 911 Carrera a few years ago! For reference, the rear motor’s power is therefore the highest in the entire Model Y range, as even the Performance version has only 235 kW (320 hp) on the rear wheels. Additionally, there are 158 kW (215 hp) for the all-wheel-drive versions on the front.

With such power, the Tesla Model Y Long Range offers remarkable driving dynamics, whether with or without passengers and their luggage.
