Tesla loses money on every Cybertruck sold
On the occasion of the presentation of its results for Q2 2024, Tesla promised to work towards profitability by 2025.
Despite a price nearly doubled compared to its promise made at the time of its unveiling in 2019, the Cybertruck continues to cost more money for Tesla than it brings in. In reality, there’s no need for excessive concern, as Tesla’s electric pickup only began production very late in 2023. The first deliveries started only in December.
Since then, production has reportedly tripled according to Tesla, but a critical voice might say that “3 x 0 = 0”. In June 2024, Tesla revealed it had registered 3,200 Cybertrucks in the United States, which translates to a daily production of about 106 vehicles. In other words, this means one Cybertruck assembled every 4.4 hours, while in its Shanghai factory in China, Tesla promises a Model Y every 30 seconds. The performance gap is staggering!
Meeting in 2025?
On the occasion of the publication of its Q2 2024 results on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, Tesla disappointed as the magic effect has vanished. Tesla has become an automaker like any other, facing issues of sales, distribution, raw material sourcing, price competition, and profitability. Its great strength remains its diversification, particularly in energy sectors (Superchargers in particular) and software.
Tesla promised, during this same meeting, an additional tripling of its production to reach an annual production figure of 125,000 Cybertrucks. The American manufacturer believes it can achieve this by the end of 2024 or early 2025. An optimistic scenario given the magnitude of the challenge. Perhaps replacing workers with humanoid robots will contribute to achieving this profitability goal…
