The BMW iX1 M Sport cheaper than the Tesla Model 3

The electric SUV from BMW iX1, a contender to the Tesla Model Y, is enjoying a welcome discount at dealerships.

The ramp-up has been gradual since its arrival on the European market in early 2024. The new BMW iX1, a cousin of the Mini Countryman, is first and foremost German-made, which is not a trivial detail. Furthermore, its base price is strategically set below 47,000 euros in France to be eligible for the environmental bonus. However, in this segment, competition is fierce among the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes EQB 250+, Volkswagen ID.4, Renault Scenic long-range, and others.

But BMW plays the sporty card with impeccable build quality to stand out. This strategy is paying off, as the iX1 is currently the best-selling electric vehicle from BMW in Europe, edging out the i4 sedan, which competes with the Tesla Model 3.

Another strength of BMW is its brand and platform synergy to keep prices in check. So much so that the M Sport finish with body kit, 18-inch wheels, and upholstery featuring sport seats and Alcantara is priced at 50,550 euros.

As it is a finish, the 4,000-euro environmental bonus is still possible, which is the cleverness of smart manufacturers like BMW. Nevertheless, to bolster sales performance in an ultra-competitive market, some dealerships are offering immediate discounts, without negotiation. We live in a time where there is no time to waste: it needs to be quick and efficient.

Cheaper than a Tesla Model 3!

With a discount of 5,580 euros, this brand-new example found by Mobiwisy will serve as a negotiating base elsewhere in France. This has become the norm, a 10% discount. Additionally, one must of course add the 4,000 euros of environmental bonus, bringing the final price down to 41,220 euros. This is thus cheaper than a Tesla Model 3.

We will not enter the sterile debate of “the Tesla has 290 horsepower“, “the Model 3 has more range“, etc. We all know, just as the depreciation of Teslas becomes staggering and the build quality, albeit improving, remains very “American”. There is no mystery: to be cheap, it must be produced in China with inexpensive labor – which may soon disappear – and with local materials.

Better range than a Tesla Model Y!

Ultimately, to transport the family, the 204 horsepower of the BMW iX1 does not overly tax the 66.5 kWh battery. The mixed WLTP range is 464 km (better than a Tesla Model Y, 455 km), with an AC charging power of 11 kW, and 130 kW at a fast charging station. This is indeed less than the Tesla, but not very problematic as the limitation often comes from charging stations that do not deliver the promised power.

The American has its qualities, and the German has its own. In the meantime, the good deals for the return to school are multiplying.
