Tesla Model Y: Is the 7-seater version coming to Europe soon?
Already available in North America, the 7-seater version of the Tesla Model Y will be sold in China this fall.
Could a pickup truck soon join the Tesla catalog? Just kidding. A flagship model for the American manufacturer, the Model Y features a 7-seat configuration in its home market, North America. In the USA especially, this is a genuine selling point, and too bad about the design of the rear window making the journey uncomfortable if you are over 6…
Four years after its introduction across the Atlantic, it appears that the models produced in China will soon offer this option starting in October 2024. However, there are still no signals regarding a rollout in Europe. Why?

A strategy adapted to the markets
In North America, there is a high demand for spacious vehicles capable of comfortably accommodating several passengers. Large families and road trip enthusiasts are ideal targets for a 7-seat version. Tesla quickly seized this opportunity by offering this configuration in the North American market, where SUVs and crossovers are very popular.
Similarly, in China, the electric vehicle market is rapidly expanding, and the demand for spacious vehicles follows this trend. Chinese families, often with three generations under one roof, seek vehicles that can transport all family members during outings. The 7-seat version of the Model Y fits perfectly into this context, justifying its imminent launch in the country.
In Europe, the situation is different. Road infrastructures, especially in urban centers, are not always suited for larger vehicles. Narrow streets, smaller parking spaces, and the higher cost of owning a bulkier vehicle can deter European consumers from opting for a 7-seat version. Families are also generally smaller, and the relationship to cars or neighborhood dynamics is quite different. Consequently, Tesla believes that the demand for this type of configuration is too low to justify its introduction.

Consumption habits
Europeans also have distinct consumption habits. They often prefer more compact vehicles that are just as efficient due to the shorter distances they travel daily. The preference for compact or midsize vehicles that offer a good balance between comfort and practicality is widespread. Thus, Tesla appears to focus on the 5-seat versions, which are more suited to these needs, for the European market. The trunk capacity, inevitably impacted by the two extra stowable seats, is also reduced.
Introducing a market-specific version requires adjustments in the production chain, which can increase costs. Tesla must also consider transportation and distribution logistics, as well as local safety regulations.
Currently, the 7-seater version is not offered for the Tesla Model Y Long Range in the United States (the standard Propulsion is no longer offered). You need to upgrade to the Long Range AWD and the option costs $2,000, or about €1,805.
And you, at this price, would you choose the 7-seater version of the Tesla Model Y?
