The development of the first electric car Made in Algeria is underway at the Center for Research in Industrial Technologies (CRTI).

The first prototype of the Algerian electric car presented last April is now on the production track while the design operations for the structure, battery, and motor have been finalized by the engineers of the CRTI. The launch date for the prototype has been set for 2025 with the aim of quickly presenting a finished model of a 100% electric Algerian car.

While North Africa is at the forefront of the electric transition with an increase in Tesla’s involvement and that of European manufacturers, this project is certainly not intended to compete with the productions of American, European, or even Chinese manufacturers. The technical specifications of the car attest to this with four seats but only 800 kg of payload. The motor has a low power of 6 KW for a maximum speed of 80 km/hour. The battery is a simple 48 V with a 220 V recharge. The CRTI, having proven its expertise in the development of flying drones, suggests that the upcoming rolling prototypes will perform much better.

This is more of an engineering exercise than a genuine commercial project. Pr Mohamed Bouchiha, the general director of Scientific Research at the Ministry of Higher Education, acknowledged this on the airwaves of National Radio during a visit to the CRTI: “There is a lack of involvement from companies in scientific research and a lack of interest from investors in the products proposed by researchers. This is why we encourage our researchers to create and develop finished products that add value to the national economy.”

But each initiative brings the country a little closer to a real industrial initiative. Tesla wasn’t built in a day, and what can be said about century-old manufacturers like Mercedes, Renault, or MG?
