Lucid Takes the Risky Bet on Luxury to Survive

Faced with serious financial difficulties, the American manufacturer Lucid is going all in with the Gravity SUV.

Lucid announced today the opening of customer orders for the large Gravity SUV on November 7, 2024, at 9:00 AM Pacific Time. With active air suspension and seven true seats, Lucid claims to have designed the best large SUV in the world, capable of adapting to the most extreme terrain changes while providing a smooth and comfortable ride with unprecedented maneuverability for a vehicle of its size. Orders will initially be taken for the Grand Touring version, which starts at $94,900 and boasts over 800 horsepower and a supposedly greater range than 700 km. We have learned to be wary of Lucid’s announcements, so this last figure seems very optimistic for a beast weighing over 2.5 tons. Production is expected to start in late 2024, with the first deliveries scheduled for the end of 2025.

Lucid is therefore offering to order a vehicle whose production has not yet begun, and customers will have to wait more than a year… at best! One really needs to desire this model above all else.

Until then, let’s stick to the promises. The Gravity thus complements the commercial offering of Lucid Motors alongside the large sedan Air. A rollout similar to what Tesla did in its early days, namely a large family vehicle (the Model S) followed by an XXL SUV, the Model X. But not everyone can be Tesla, and many manufacturers have stumbled while trying to replicate the model imagined by Elon Musk. The owners of the Fisker Ocean would surely agree.

A commercialization outside the United States is indeed planned, but this model doesn’t quite tick the boxes of a European bestseller. Too big, too expensive, too uncertain,… too many unknowns at this stage to consider success, but we are hoping to be proven wrong.
