A Revolutionary Device for Cyclists’ Safety in Issy-les-Moulineaux

Issy-les-Moulineaux innovates with an intelligent luminous roadway designed to alert drivers to the presence of cyclists.

We must move beyond easy clichés and accept once and for all that the danger on the road for cyclists does not always come from cars. Often, it is the lack of visibility of cyclists that creates risky situations. Whether due to blind spots or poorly marked intersections, these issues jeopardize the coexistence between motorists and cyclists. With this in mind, Issy-les-Moulineaux is innovating with the Flowell solution developed by Colas, which aims to make cyclists more visible and improve their safety.

The system, already tested in Nantes, stands out with continuous and dashed luminous lines as well as bike pictograms integrated directly into the ground. Located at the intersection of RD50 (Rue Rouget de Lisle) and RD7 (Quai Franklin Roosevelt), near the Issy Bridge, Flowell ensures visual continuity of the bike lane. Thanks to dynamic and interactive markings, drivers are alerted to cyclists’ presence and encouraged to stop when turning right onto RD7.

This system, powered by LEDs and activated by sensors only when cyclists pass, offers better visibility and reduces risks related to blind spots or inattention. The goal is to strengthen safety and promote harmonious coexistence between cyclists and motorists.

On December 19, André Santini, former minister and mayor of Issy-les-Moulineaux, along with Pierre Vanstoflegatte, CEO of Colas, officially inaugurated Flowell. This initiative demonstrates the city and its partners’ commitment to sustainable mobility and road safety. With Flowell, Issy-les-Moulineaux affirms its status as a pioneering city in innovative solutions for safer and more respectful traffic for all users.
