New Porsche 911 Carrera S, in perpetual evolution

Porsche 911 Carrera S

As a way to return to its origins, the “Sport” version of the 911 brings a new soul with more style and power.

First introduced in 1966, the 911 S marked a turning point in Porsche’s history by offering a more powerful and sporty version of the famous 911. With its 2.0-liter engine producing 160 hp, it laid the foundations for a long dynasty. Today, the new 911 Carrera S continues this heritage by combining performance and refinement, though with a slight lack of technological ambition that is unfortunate. Lost among the various versions and trims, it’s difficult to find that little extra that made previous S models special.

Positioned between the 911 Carrera and the 911 Carrera GTS, this version boasts an impressive technical sheet. It is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo Boxer engine developing 480 hp (353 kW) and 530 Nm of torque, which is 30 hp more than the previous iteration. The integration of optimized turbochargers and a new cooling system allows the German to make a dramatic leap in power and efficiency. The Carrera S Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, with a top speed of 308 km/h, thanks to an 8-speed PDK transmission. Nothing extraordinary, but nothing to complain about either. No naturally aspirated engine, no manual gearbox, no boost… a car that is almost too perfect to be truly remarkable.

On the technical front, the 911 Carrera S benefits from enhanced equipment, such as 20 and 21-inch wheels, the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+), and improved braking borrowed from the 911 Carrera GTS, with red calipers and larger discs. Options like ceramic PCCB brakes, the Sports PASM suspension lowered by 10 mm, and rear-wheel steering further refine performance and handling, but at the cost of a significant increase in price. A tradition at Porsche.

The interior favors a simple and functional aesthetic, with standard black leather upholstery. The seats and trims can be personalized with extended finishes and contrasting stitching. The rear seats, foldable and included as standard in the Coupe version, add practicality to this decidedly sporty model. Among the options, there is the Sport Chrono package with the Porsche Track Precision app, designed for circuit driving enthusiasts.

Available in Coupe and Cabriolet versions, the new 911 Carrera S in France starts at 157,300 euros for the Coupe and 171,500 euros for the Convertible, to which unfortunately the maximum tax of 60,000 euros must be added. Some say this could be easily reduced or even erased by a subtle hybridization that wouldn’t detract from the magic character of the Flat 6 and could even improve the car’s performance! It’s about time to look into this issue.
