Segway recalls 220,000 dangerous electric scooters

Segway, a leader in the micromobility sector, has announced a massive recall of 220,000 Ninebot Max electric scooters.

This recall concerns a safety issue identified with the folding mechanism of the Segway Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP models, which can unexpectedly unlock during use. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), this malfunction can lead to a sudden collapse of the handlebars or stem, significantly increasing the risk of falls and serious injuries for users. To date, Segway has recorded 68 incidents related to this issue, including 20 injuries. Reported cases include bruises, cuts, and in some instances, fractures.

The affected models were sold between January 2020 and February 2025 in large retail stores as well as on online platforms such as Amazon and the official Segway website. The Ninebot Max G30P is recognizable by its gray design with yellow accents, while the Max G30LP features a black color with yellow touches.

Popular among urban workers and students, these scooters offer a range of over 30 kilometers per charge, a feature highly valued for short and medium-distance commutes. The folding mechanism at the heart of the recall contributes to their portability in dense urban environments.

In response, Segway advises owners to immediately stop using the affected scooters. Instead of replacing them, the company offers a free maintenance kit including tools and instructions to check and adjust the folding mechanism. Customers can contact Segway’s dedicated service directly on the manufacturer’s website.

This recall underscores the importance of rigorous quality control in the micromobility industry, where safety remains a major concern. As the popularity of electric scooters continues to grow, manufacturers will need to step up efforts to ensure the reliability and durability of their products.
