The Tesla Model Y for less than 28,000 euros?

Yes, it’s completely crazy, but it must be true since it’s Elon Musk himself announcing it on his social network X (formerly Twitter).

As you know, at Mobiwisy we love to monitor the evolution of Tesla prices. Primarily because it is an inexhaustible source of analyses of the current automotive market. The transition to electric mobility has profoundly disrupted a world established for 100 years, and today we no longer talk about years but about days.

Next, Tesla is Elon Musk. Whether we love him and admire him, or fear him and hate him, the American entrepreneur cannot leave anyone indifferent. So when it’s Elon Musk announcing a ridiculous price for a Tesla model, we fall off our chair and then compose ourselves to try to understand what just happened!

In a tweet published yesterday, Elon Musk from his personal account announces the Tesla Model Y at $29,490, which is €27,640 at today’s exchange rate!

Of course, when we are told a price, we are going to verify. In France, no surprise, the Tesla Model Y is listed from €44,990. Unfortunately for the French market, that’s still over €15,500 difference from the price promised by Uncle Musk. Let’s now go to the American version of the Tesla website to confirm that the Model Y is… estimated at $29,490, but its selling price is still $42,990!

So how is this trick possible? To arrive at this price, Tesla deducts from the selling price the tax credit to which some Americans are eligible. At $7,500, this is the maximum tier that doesn’t even concern 7% of households as it is conditioned by income, and especially by place of residence. Each state indeed has its own tax rules. Tesla then deducts 5 years of fuel savings amounting to $6,000, and this is frankly totally dishonest! Who knows in advance how many years they will be driving and how many kilometers they will make annually?

This is purely and simply false advertising, but in the United States it is legal when you explain to the consumer why and how you are misleading them… With 74 million views, it’s a communication success for Musk and ultimately that’s all that matters. Tesla is pulling a fast one on you; it’s up to you to decide how that makes you feel and how you want to react.
