Mercedes Keeps the Mystery Alive Around the Intriguing CLA

Few Mercedes models have benefited from such a communication plan before their unveiling. So, what can we expect?

This new model is the first of a completely new family of Mercedes. A car that, according to the German brand, is set to open a new chapter for the entry-level segment. Big ambitions, big promises, and inevitably big expectations surrounding this CLA designed to set new standards in autonomy, efficiency, and charging speed. A 100% electric model, then? Well, no! First surprise: Mercedes wants to give customers the choice between an electric powertrain and a high-tech electrified internal combustion engine. We keep hearing that a car designed to be exclusively electric will inevitably be more efficient than an electric car built on a multi-energy platform. This makes perfect sense because the dimensions, weights, and structures of electric and thermal engines are not, and never will be, identical. And what about the batteries and tanks? The compromise is the enemy of the good.

Is Mercedes still afraid of fully electric?

This choice by Mercedes is therefore quite surprising, but the star brand must know what it’s doing. Ola Källenius, the head of Mercedes, even got directly involved in promoting the car in a video posted on social media. We see him testing the model in stunning mountain scenery before extensively praising his new secret weapon.

The electric version of the CLA will, for the first time in large series, incorporate the EQXX concept technology. This next-generation electric powertrain features a two-speed transmission, which could be a real advantage in terms of efficiency as well as sportiness, two criteria often seen as antagonistic.

However, little information is available about the hybrid CLA except that it will feature 48V technology combined with a new electrified transmission. No plug-in hybrid at this stage, but a thermal engine with electric assistance. The last small detail revealed is that the front signature takes inspiration from the light band introduced on the EQS, which is expected to become a stylistic marker for the upcoming 100% electric range.
