MG is preparing a new offensive in the electric city car segment with an entry-level model called MG 2.

Designed in the UK, this future direct competitor to the electric Renault 5 aims for an attractive starting price of around £22,000 (about €26,000), well below the MG 4. A choice between Camembert and Cheddar will be available to Europeans from 2028, according to the manufacturer.

David Allison, director of MG UK, spoke to our colleagues at Autocar during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. He confirmed that this new arrival will be positioned in a “very aggressive” pricing strategy to meet the growing demand for compact and affordable models. “We have lost our position as the most accessible player in the electric vehicle market, and it is time to reclaim it,” he acknowledged.

Based on the modular electric MSP platform developed by SAIC – already used by the MG 4 – the MG 2 is expected to deliver performance comparable to the new Renault 5, featuring a motor of around 150 hp and a range of up to 400 km thanks to a 52 kWh battery. The first prototypes, already well advanced, give hope for road testing to begin in the near future.

Designed to meet the tastes and constraints of the European market, the MG 2 will benefit from a design crafted by the MG studio in London. “This kind of car has no relevance in China or Korea, where small electric city cars do not find their audience,” explains Allison. “This is a project that must be born here, in Europe.”

The engineering center in Longbridge will fine-tune the model for the European market, while MG is also considering potential in countries like Italy, where the adoption rate of EVs remains low. “Offering an electric city car suited to Italian alleys can truly change the game,” emphasizes Allison. With the MG 2, the Sino-British brand aims to prove that the future of affordable electric vehicles will also be about style, compactness, and practicality.
