With 2.7 million units sold in 2021, the bicycle is the most popular individual transportation means in France. The two-wheeled vehicle continues to diversify, responding to new needs and uses. Here are the 4 types to know.

Muscle bike, affordable and eclectic

It’s the original, the authentic one, favored by athletes and purists. It remains the best-selling type as well. Naturally, it’s the most accessible, starting at 100 euros for basic models or a few dozen euros second-hand. It comes in many forms. You can find the traditional high-frame bike, as well as city bikes with open frames that make it easier to pass the legs and wear skirts/dresses. There are also variants for road or more off-road uses, like the VTC (hybrid bike), mountain bikes (VTT), or gravel bikes. For the more trendy, there are single-speed bikes (fixed gear), which simplify mechanics, and Fixies with a fixed sprocket.

The e-bike, the electric bicycle for long distances

The first electric bikes (e-bikes) appeared over thirty years ago, but the real boom started in the 2010s. Capable of reaching 25 km/h with minimal effort, they are ideal for increasing distances, or even replacing motorized two-wheelers or cars. More integrated into the frame, the batteries are also more efficient, offering 50 to 100 km of autonomy. They also come in many categories, from urban models for daily use, versatile hybrid VTCs to leisure VTTAEs. A new model with small 24-inch wheels is also emerging to improve accessibility for all. However, the price of e-bikes tends to be higher. While some models are below 1,000 euros, examples available at Decathlon, Go Sport, Intersport, or Boulanger generally average around 2,000 euros in France. Of course, high-end models from French brands like Moustache or German brands like Riese & Müller can quickly exceed 4,000 euros. But at this price point, durability, quality components, powerful motors, and long battery life are guaranteed. Electric mountain bikes (e-MTBs) are even more expensive, with brands like Cube, Trek, Cannondale, Canyon, or Specialized. Lastly, don’t forget that rentals are multiplying, especially in major cities. Examples include Véligo, starting at 40 euros a month in Paris, Dance, or Swapfiets.

The folding bike, to take everywhere

Very trendy, folding bikes seem to cater to a niche market. However, this hasn’t stopped many brands like Decathlon or Xiaomi from following the pioneer of the sector Brompton, whose bikes are abundant in London. Cleverly designed, they fold in 15 to 20 seconds to easily fit under an office desk during the day or inside a means of transport. Heavy to handle, strong arms are welcome to carry them. However, some models make significant efforts to reduce weight, such as Vello, made with titanium.

Prices vary, and they tend to be higher than muscle bikes, especially when they are electric. For a basic model, expect around 500 euros, and several thousand euros for a very lightweight or high-end electric version.

The cargo bike for families and professionals

Although still somewhat niche, cargo bikes are unlikely to stay that way for long. Because these heavy-duty bikes are targeting families and freight transport! Professionals will find them ideal for transporting equipment, while households will be amazed by their storage capacity, similar to that of a small car. Parents will love the models designed to carry one or more children, outdoors or even on vacation.

Available in three forms (longtail/extended, two-wheel carriers, or tricycle with three wheels), they are usually sold starting at 3,000 euros, although Decathlon or Gaya are trying to offer cheaper options. For specialists, brands like Babboe, Urban Arrow, Yuba, Oklo, Douze, or Kiffy are well-known. And yes, many French brands are involved! Nevertheless, this budget is significant. It is mainly due to the fact that most of these bicycles are electric, providing effortless movement. The total also increases with additional equipment (rain protection, benches, etc.). Fortunately, financial aid for cargo bike purchases can go up to 4,000 euros!
