In September 2024 alone, a total of 31 hydrogen fuel cell buses and 20 battery electric buses from Iveco were ordered in France.

Adopted in December 2019, the Mobility Orientation Law (LOM) requires local authorities to modernize and make their public transport systems more sustainable. Among the key measures of this law is the obligation for urban areas to gradually renew their bus fleets by integrating low-emission vehicles, namely electric buses, hydrogen buses, or those running on biogas.

This is a boon for manufacturers like Iveco, who see their business sustained for decades in Europe due to an absolutely colossal fleet needing replacement. For instance, three contracts were just signed in France in September 2024 with the municipalities of Cannes Lérins, Lorient Agglomeration, and Grand Reims.

Millions of euros in investment

Thus, the agglomeration community of Cannes Lérins has ordered 12 hydrogen fuel cell buses GX 337 H2 LINIUM BRT. Deliveries will start in the second half of 2025 and will complement the 35 battery electric buses IVECO BUS GX ELEC already in service.

Lorient Agglomeration has also opted for the hydrogen technology from IVECO BUS for its network, with an order of 19 GX 337 H2 LINIUM buses, of which 5 will enter service during the second half of 2025.

Finally, Grand Reims Mobilities has selected 20 battery electric buses GX 437 ELEC LINIUM BRT, with an option for 9 additional vehicles. These buses will start running in the streets of Reims in the fall of 2025.

The hydrogen fuel cell bus selected by Cannes and Lorient is the result of a partnership between Iveco Group and Hyundai Motor Company, initiated in 2022. This model is equipped with an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system developed by HTWO, Hyundai’s hydrogen brand, as well as a battery provided by FPT Industrial, the Iveco group’s brand specializing in the design of low environmental impact powertrains.

The electric bus for Reims is part of a successful range, chosen by over one hundred clients in Europe, with more than three thousand units ordered to date. Silence and better air quality will now be appreciated in these cities.
