Dunkerque and Annecy acquire hydrogen buses

The two communities placed orders with IVECO BUS for a total of 13 hydrogen buses of the new generation.
The Urban Community of Dunkerque and the Agglomeration Community of Grand Annecy have taken another step towards cleaner mobility through the public market of the UGAP (Union of Public Purchasing Groups), thus reaffirming their commitment to decarbonizing urban transport.
Specifically, Dunkerque ordered 10 units, while Grand Annecy will receive 3. Deliveries will be gradually carried out until 2026, expanding fleets already composed of electric buses from the same manufacturer, and marking an initial foray into hydrogen technology for these networks.
“We are extremely proud that the Urban Community of Dunkerque and Grand Annecy have renewed their trust by adopting our hydrogen buses. These new orders, through the UGAP, highlight our ability to support our clients in their transition to zero emissions,” said Giorgio Zino, Director of Commercial Operations Europe at IVECO BUS.
A mature technology at the service of territories
The chosen model is a 12-meter hydrogen bus, combining a Hyundai 100 kW fuel cell and a FPT Industrial 69 kWh battery. This configuration significantly reduces hydrogen consumption—by 15 to 20% compared to usual levels—while ensuring excellent performance, particularly in thermal comfort and component lifespan.
With extended autonomy and a capacity of up to 110 passengers, this bus is perfectly suited to high-frequency urban routes. It also addresses energy resilience issues, in a context where diversifying energy sources is becoming a priority.
Exemplary communities
These two projects are part of a national and European dynamic of ecological transition in mobility. Dunkerque, already a pioneer with its free transportation network, reinforces its status as a laboratory for sustainable mobility, while Annecy, committed to an ambitious sustainable development strategy, affirms its desire to combine tourism attractiveness with air quality.
These orders also reflect the rising role of hydrogen in the energy mix of public transportation. Thanks to actors like IVECO BUS, which is heavily investing in this technology alongside major industrial partners, the offer is gaining structure and becoming accessible to local communities through tools like the UGAP.
A strong signal for the French industry
Manufactured in France, notably at the historic site of Annonay (Ardèche) for some parts, IVECO BUS’s hydrogen buses also contribute to the growth of a green European industrial sector, creating jobs and driving innovation.
With these new orders, IVECO BUS confirms its leading role in the energy transition of the public transport sector, and its strategic positioning in zero-emission technologies, complementing its already well-established electric solutions.
