Hyundai Unveils Its First eVTOL at CES Las Vegas

Hyundai takes a concrete step forward with its vertical takeoff and landing electric vehicle (eVTOL) project at the CES in Las Vegas 2024.
Mobiwisy had already discussed Supernal, Hyundai Motor’s eVTOL project. On Wednesday, January 10, 2024, its first electric vertical takeoff aircraft was presented. Named S-A2, this vehicle, designed as an air taxi, will be able to carry 4 passengers plus one crew member.
Aiming for commercialization in 2028, this electric aircraft is intended to address issues of mobility, speed, and safety, which are not well-known in France (and that’s a good thing).

The S-A2 boasts a V-tail aircraft profile with 8 fully tiltable electric rotors. Its cruise speed is 120 miles per hour, or 193 km/h, at an altitude of 1500 feet, or 457 meters. The range will be sufficient for typical operations of 25 to 40 miles, or 40 to 64 km.
Stunning Silence
The real feat probably lies in its low noise level. Hyundai promises 65 dB during takeoff and landing, and 45 dB in horizontal cruise. It is as quiet as a dishwasher, according to the South Korean manufacturer!

This silence ensures the possibility of installing “vertiports,” sort of stations for eVTOLs, in city centers.
Measuring 10 meters long and 15 meters wide, the Hyundai Supernal S-A2 is not exactly a small aircraft. Hyundai plans mass production to reduce costs and improve its economic model. Ultimately, the goal is to eliminate noisy and polluting helicopters, like those shuttling between Nice Airport and Monaco. But also in Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Beijing, Mexico City, or Los Angeles.
