McMurtry sets a new record with the McMurtry Spéirling, the first car to drive upside down from a stationary position.

Thanks to its patented Downforce-on-Demand system, this electric hypercar achieved this feat in a specially designed facility at the company’s headquarters in Gloucestershire, in front of employees and independent judges. This success is part of a series of impressive records for the Spéirling. It also broke the absolute circuit record at Top Gear, surpassing the previous record held by a 2004 Renault R24 F1 car by 3.1 seconds. The Spéirling also holds records at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Laguna Seca hill climb.

This British single-seater hypercar was designed by the McMurtry team, continuing the vision of Sir David McMurtry, its founder who passed away last December. Its Downforce-on-Demand system generates up to 2000 kg of downforce, even at a standstill, thanks to a fan placed underneath the car, allowing the vehicle to operate under unprecedented conditions.

A technological feat

During the demonstration, Thomas Yates, CEO of McMurtry Automotive, drove the Spéirling onto a ramp leading to a rotating platform. Once inverted, the car remained fixed thanks to a vacuum created beneath its chassis. Thomas then advanced without any external support, demonstrating the unique capabilities of this technology.

Capable of reaching 100 km/h in just 1.5 seconds, the Spéirling covers a quarter mile in 8 seconds and handles turns at over 3g. Its matte black and falcon camouflage livery design pays homage to McMurtry’s first fan car in 2021, where the idea of driving upside down had been considered.

The prototype used for this feat, Spéirling PURE Validation Prototype 1 (VP1), represents a key step ahead of the planned production in 2026. Only 100 units will be manufactured, each equipped with a 100 kWh battery providing 20 minutes of use in race mode. Designed according to LMP1 safety standards, the Spéirling ensures excellent maneuverability and safety.
