Tesla Tunnels: The Urban Transport Revolution?

With its new project in Florida, The Boring Company reignites the debate about the future of urban tunnels according to Tesla.

New bid documents revealed by our colleagues at Teslarati have unveiled the technical details of the Loop that is set to connect the north campus of Universal Orlando to the Universal Epic Universe park. The company founded by Elon Musk plans a system consisting of two distinct tunnels, one for each direction of traffic, with an estimated timeline of about 18 months from permits to design and construction.

The project would mobilize eight internal specialists (tunnel engineers, structural engineers, tunneling experts) and six subcontractors for fire protection, communications, and soil treatment. The company claims to have the necessary equipment available immediately, a key argument for reducing timelines and costs.

Cheaper and less intrusive?

Like the Vegas Loop in Las Vegas, the system would rely on Tesla vehicles providing on-demand point-to-point transportation. Unlike a traditional metro or tram, there is no fixed line with mandated intermediate stops: vehicles are dispatched based on demand, with real-time adjustable capacity. Stations could be underground or elevated, connected by ramps.

However, Tesla’s tunnel project in Florida will face significant geotechnical challenges, including a high water table and a limestone subsurface prone to sinkholes. A local study still needs to validate the technical feasibility.
