The fuel cells will be supplied by Cellcentric, the joint venture created by Volvo Group and Daimler Truck.
Long-distance capable trucks
Volvo aims for a range of 1,000 km for its hydrogen trucks. The gross vehicle weight could reach approximately 65 tonnes. The two onboard fuel cells will provide up to 300 kW of electricity. As for refueling time, it should not exceed 15 minutes. This means there’s no need to immobilize the truck for hours before resuming operation. Along with the significant range, this is the main advantage of this technology over battery-electric alternatives.
For hydrogen to become a truly sustainable solution, a less polluting production process must be developed. Volvo is aware of the issue but anticipates significant progress in the very near future. “We expect the supply of green hydrogen to increase sharply over the next two years, as many sectors will rely on it to reduce their CO2 emissions“, explains Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks.
