As part of France 2030, the government continues to invest in hydrogen with a new call for projects of 175 million euros.

The French government aims to continue investing in the hydrogen sector, both for industrial uses and mobility applications. Thus, within the framework of the France 2030 investment plan, the government is providing companies with an additional 175 million euros on top of the initial 9 billion euro investment.

Indeed, hydrogen is used in various industries such as oil and agriculture. In the first, it is used for refining, and in the second, it is used for ammonia production. Moreover, hydrogen, as an energy carrier, can be used for decarbonized mobility.

Recently, Toyota partnered with VDL Groep to invest in hydrogen fuel cell trucks equipped with hydrogen. According to both brands, this would allow for gains in weight and space in the vehicle. These vehicles can transport more goods and cost less for companies wishing to use them.

What projects are currently under study?

In September 2022, during a European call for projects, Europe selected 41 projects for hydrogen, including 10 French projects. The French government has decided to invest €2.1 billion in these projects.

These projects mainly concern the “development of the industrial supply of equipment for decarbonized hydrogen.” Thus, these projects will enable the construction of the following elements:

  • Four electrolysis gigafactories;
  • Hydrogen tank production sites;
  • Fuel cells for sustainable mobility;
  • Hydrogen-powered trains and utility vehicles;
  • And materials necessary for the production of these equipment.

The French government highlights the 5,200 jobs directly created by these projects.

The new call for projects on decarbonized hydrogen will allow other companies to contribute to the country’s decarbonization strategy. It is increasingly restricting urban circulation rules through its Low Emission Zones and its development of electric mobility.

Hydrogen is an increasingly viable solution for mobility due to its energy storage capacity, but production and refueling infrastructures are not yet widespread. The website H2 Mobile lists hydrogen refueling stations. Currently, there are 42 stations, of which 29 are operational and the rest are under construction.

A solution for the future of mobility and industry, which remains to be developed!
