A new hydrogen bus line under trial

Clermont Auvergne Metropolis and SMTC-AC entrust Keolis with the hydrogen bus line pilot project.
As part of their energy transition policy, Clermont Auvergne Metropolis and SMTC-AC will test a fleet of hydrogen vehicles on a heavily used T2C public transport route.
Keolis will operate and maintain the 14 hydrogen vehicles, both new and retrofitted, for a period of 10 years starting from September 2024. The Group is also the project manager for this unprecedented trial. It will coordinate the involved partner companies in implementing the project, from renewable hydrogen production to fleet fueling and sharing of acquired experience.
The project partners presented this initiative on Wednesday, October 18, at the 2023 National Public Transport Meetings (RNTP), in the presence of Marie-Ange Debon, CEO of Keolis, Olivier Bianchi, Mayor of Clermont-Ferrand and President of Clermont Auvergne Metropolis, and François Rage, President of SMTC-AC.
The project involves developing a local ecosystem dedicated to hydrogen, from the production of 100% decarbonized energy (Gravanches station), to fueling the fleet (compression and distribution station in Cournon-d’Auvergne), as well as commissioning 10 new buses and 4 retrofitted coaches.
The route 35-36, where these vehicles will operate, comprises two combined urban lines. It connects downtown Clermont-Ferrand (Delille Montlosier) with eastern suburbs: Lempdes, Mur-sur-Allier, and Pont-du-Château. Keolis will operate and maintain it starting from the 2024 school year.
KEY FIGURES
- 2 combined urban lines
- Route: From central Clermont-Ferrand to Lempdes, Mur-sur-Allier, and Pont-du-Château
- 23 to 41 stops depending on the route
