The Taiwanese battery manufacturer ProLogium has confirmed the start of production in a new factory in France in 2027.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced last year an investment of €5.2 billion from ProLogium in a battery plant in the northern region of Dunkirk, strengthening an emerging specialized cluster dedicated to the European electric vehicle industry. Addressing journalists at the inauguration of a factory in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan, which will serve as a model for the French plant, ProLogium’s CEO Vincent Yang said that “if all goes well,” mass production should begin in France in 2027.
ProLogium has recently become a major partner of Mercedes-Benz, as the German automaker strives to make all its vehicles fully electric by 2030 and catch up with leaders BYD and Tesla. In return, Mercedes has invested in the battery manufacturer to jointly develop new solid-state battery models.
Europe continues to court Taiwan as tensions between the island nation and China intensify. Chinese threats against Taiwan serve Beijing both as an opportunity to bring the island into its authoritarian sphere and to dismantle American alliances in the region.
