IBIS Intelligent Battery Integrated System

A more reliable and less costly battery, this is Stellantis’ project for their new battery.

25 people have been working on the project for four years. The team is composed of engineers and researchers from CNRS, Stellantis, and Saft. The project is called IBIS “Intelligent Battery Integrated System” and aims to design a battery that is less expensive and more reliable than the current generation.

How will this new battery work?

“The electronic converter boards that perform the functions of power inverters and chargers are mounted as close as possible to the lithium-ion cells. A sophisticated control system allows the production of alternating current for an electric motor, directly from the battery,” states the press release.

The main goal of this new battery?

The goal of the new batteries is to “reduce the weight and cost of propulsion and manufacturing of electric vehicles, while offering a large number of new features,” the press release published by Stellantis today reads.

Since summer 2022, a stationary demonstrator has been the subject of numerous patents. A vehicle prototype is being built to ultimately test the project on development benches, then to move onto test tracks and open roads. A long process that Stellantis and its partners hope to refine before 2030 and the end of the decade.
