10 Minutes of Charging for 400 km of Range: A Dream in the Making?

CATL announces the upcoming release of a battery capable of gaining 400 km of range in 10 minutes of charging.

Many battery manufacturers are trying to produce the best possible battery. Some focus on battery range of up to 1,000 km, while others focus on very fast charging, like recently CATL, with its 400 km charge in “only” 10 minutes.

A very rapid charging speed

CATL announced yesterday during an online livestream the release of its new battery. It is composed of lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) capable of gaining 400 kilometers of range in ten minutes of charge. The Chinese manufacturer’s new battery is expected to arrive by the end of the year. Technology director Gao Han stated that “electric vehicles equipped with Shenxing batteries will be launched on the market in the first quarter of 2024”. In addition to the 10-minute charge, the battery could have a range of nearly 700 km.

It should be added that the 400 km charge in 10 minutes is under Chinese homologation and the CLTC cycle, which is a very broad cycle, even more so than the WLTP cycle used in Europe.

The advantage of low temperatures

There are many preconceptions regarding the battery range in cold weather. However, the Chinese company has a key advantage: charging at low temperatures. In just 30 minutes, the battery could recharge up to 80% at -10°C.

This news could benefit new batteries that will be developed in the coming months, allowing new vehicles to have batteries with faster charging in low temperatures and greater range.
