Boulogne-Billancourt is testing illuminated pedestrian crossings

Alternative to traffic lights and red lights, illuminated pedestrian crossings seem to have consensus.
Since April 17th, a pedestrian crossing located on Yves-Kermen Street, near the Digital School and Jean-Renoir College, is in the testing phase. This innovative crossing uses Flowell technology, developed by Colas, without traffic lights.
Flowell is distinguished by the installation of luminous tiles at the ends of the crossing strips. These tiles, activated by thermal detection when a pedestrian enters the zone, improve visibility and encourage drivers to slow down and respect priorities. They work day and night, in all weather conditions, and automatically turn off when no pedestrians are detected.

This initiative is part of measures adopted following the General State of the Public Space (2022-2023), organized by the city of Boulogne-Billancourt to improve safety near schools. GPSO, a creative and sustainable territory, has decided to test Colas’ solution in response to these challenges. A behavioral study is currently assessing the impact of Flowell before and after its installation, to measure its long-term effectiveness.
And the light was for pedestrians
Urban traffic management is a major challenge, combining road safety and traffic flow. Flowell offers an innovative solution with LED tiles integrated into the roadway, providing dynamic and adaptive signage. This technology, tested on 18 sites since 2019, has been approved since 2023 by the Ministry of Transport as the first authorized dynamic horizontal signage in France. It is also used for other applications, such as securing bicycle crossings or modulating public spaces.

Furthermore, Flowell is expanding internationally. In Brooklyn, a flexible sidewalk using this technology has been deployed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, enabling strategic urban management. This device offers luminous markings adaptable for various uses, such as parking, drop-off zones, or temporary extensions for food trucks and public spaces.
